Lattice Panels

This page describes the method of making lattice panels from components supplied by Halfords. Lattice is made in two standard finishes known as ‘Fine Sawn’ and ‘Dressed’. It is available in 18 panel sizes ranging from 1.8 x 0.3 metres to 3.0 x 1.8 metres and the timber moulding which frames the lattice is known as ‘Surround’. It is 68 x 42mm and profiled as shown in Sketch 3. The standard panels often have to be trimmed to fit existing spaces or design requirements and this leaflet sets out the principles to follow when custom building a lattice panel to fit your exact space. The general principles are are discussed first with a step by step guide following.

Sketch 1 - Surround Frame Sketch 2 - Lattice Panel
Lattice Frame
Dotted lines show outline of lattice panels when set into the rebates of the frame.
The outside measurement of this frame is 450 x 450mm
Sketch 3 - Frame Sketch 4 - Assembled Frame

Fine Sawn lattice to fit this frame would be cut 410 x 410mm. (40mm less than the frame width and height.
Dressed lattice to fit this frame would be cut 390 x 390mm (60mm less than the frame width and height)
These reductions allow the panel to fit into the rebate of the surround as shown in Sketch 3.

Measuring and Making Up
Measure up the exact outside measurements of the lattice frame. In this example, Sketch 5, shows a panel to act as a screen and rail for a deck. It is important to make sure your measurements are precise. Double check and cut and fit a piece of waste wood as a spacer. When you are confident about the dimensions, mark and cut from the 68 x 42mm Surround timber. In Sketch 6 we show the top and bottom surrounds marked to be cut from a 3.6 metre length and the two sides from a 1.8 metre piece. Use a mitre gauge to ensure an exact 45 degree cut and scribe right around the four sides of the timber if cutting with a hand saw.
Sketch 6

Make sure the short side is the side with the rebate. Another common mistake is to cut parallel angles -
The lattice is then marked and cut to fit the frame. The panel will be either 40mm or 60mm less in width and height depending whether it is Fine Sawn (40mm) or Dressed (60mm). See the Sketches 1 - 4

Method of joining mitred corners with 3 x 65mm
screws at the marked positions:
Now join the bottom and side rail as shown below and by the method illustrated at left. Set the lattice panel in the surround rebate, add the remaining two surround pieces, as below and fix all corners as shown to the left.

Sketch 11 below shows how lattice is secured to the frame by angle screwing lattice laths to frame.

Secure the lattice to the frame with skewed 40mm galvanised screws at approximately 250mm centres. See Sketches 11 and 12 below “A” shows position for Dressed Lattice and “B” the position for Fine Sawn.
